The Power of the Eye in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream

The ability of rhetoric to create important and interesting themes in literature can be somewhat lost among the more straightforward and commonplace techniques employed by authors to form major points and ideas within their writing. Techniques such as plot devices, dialog, and allusions are no doubt incredibly meaningful to the transmission of a work of literature’s themes, although in many cases the rhetoric of that literary work may be just as, if not more important. One very widespread rhetorical device, repetition, has been used by writers throughout the ages to form subtle yet major ideas in their work. Repetition can be used in various ways including, but not limited to, “palilogia”, the repetition of a single word, with no other words in between, “anaphora”, the repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of every clause, and “alliteration”, the repetition of the same sound at the beginning of two or more stressed syllables. One of the greatest masters of the forms of repetition in literature was William Shakespeare, who used almost every conceivable type of repetition.

Besides the more technical uses of repetition, he is famous for repeating certain keywords throughout his plays to construct specific themes. In the Bedford Companion to Shakespeare, Russ McDonald emphasizes Shakespeare’s decisive use of language, writing that, “Shakespeare’s verbal power is an inexhaustible subject; finally it is a mystery. The magic of his language, its irresistible attraction, is a result of an artistic imagination speaking to the imagination of the audience, and figurative language is the medium for that communication. As we learn from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, images, imagination, and magic are all of a piece” (37-8). In the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare uses a couple of different words steadily throughout the play, one being “moon”, and another being “eye”. The repetition of the word “moon” has been explored extensively and has clear and widely known connections with themes such as virginity and inconstancy. This is because of what Diana the Roman goddess of the moon symbolizes and the Elizabethans’ connection between the moon’s waxing and waning and the indecisiveness of human character. In light of the large amount of research and knowledge on the symbolic importance of the moon in the play and in literature in general, the other highly repeated word, “eye”, should be given some closer examination and thought. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare, strong and rich connections can be drawn between the repetition of the word “eye” and the fickleness of the imagination in relation to love.

Perhaps the best place to begin is at the end. Theseus’ speech at the beginning of Act 5, Scene 1 is quite possibly the clearest embodiment of the concept of fickleness of the imagination in relation to love within the play:

Lovers and madmen have such seething brains,
Such shaping fantasies, that apprehend
More than cool reason ever comprehends.
The lunatic, the lover, and the poet
Are of imagination all compact.
One sees more devils than vast hell could hold:
That is the madman. The lover, all as frantic,
Sees Helen’s beauty in a brow of Egypt.
The poet’s eye, in a fine frenzy rolling,
Doth glance from heaven to earth, from earth to heaven,
And as imagination bodies forth
The form of things unknown, the poet’s pen
Turns them to shapes, and gives to airy nothing
A local habitation and a name. (5.1.4-17)

Theseus makes the argument that lovers, madmen, and poets’ realities are not based in reason but rather in their imaginations. The madman sees devils that cannot possibly be there; the lover, just as mad himself, sees Helen of Troy, who was supposedly the most beautiful woman to ever live, in the face of a gypsy, a race thought of as inferior and ugly by the Elizabethans; the poet sees the world around him and imagines things unseen, turning these fantasies into realities with his pen. In all instances, the eyes lead these people into fantastical imagination. For better or worse, it seems inevitable that one’s eyes deceive them from time to time.

In regards to the four lovers of this play, Helena, Hermia, Demetrius, and Lysander, it appears that, although it looks not with the eyes, love nevertheless looks at the eyes. That is to say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This notion is perchance understood most easily from a speech by Helena in Act 1, Scene 1 when she talks bitterly of Demetrius’ betrayal: “For ere Demetrius looked on Hermia’s eyne He hailed down oaths that he was only mine, And when this hail some heat from Hermia felt, So he dissolved, and showers of oaths did melt” (1.1.242-5). Before Demetrius had looked into Hermia’s eyes, he had sworn to Helena that she was his one and only. After looking upon Hermia’s eye, Demetrius fell in love with her, and the oaths that he had previously sworn to Helena seemed to just drift away. Thus, a person’s eyes can entrance the imagination and create love seemingly on the instant. This can be understood even more so in the old cliché, ‘love is blind’.

Love may truly be blind, and it sure acts as if it is when you look at all the great love stories in which characters are willing to endure insane hardships and overcome almost any hindrance in hopes of being united with their love-objects. When we look at the lovers of the play, they are engulfed by desire and imagination which does not represent the reality of their love-objects. Helena gives a number of speeches throughout the play which deal with the role of the eyes in love, many of which seem to foresee the infatuations that occur in the forest. In fact, within the first scene Helena says, “Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind, And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind. Nor hath love’s mind any judgment of taste; Wings and no eyes figure unheedy haste.” (1.1.234-7). In Latin, the verb “cupio, cupere, cupivi, cupitus” means “to desire, want”. Taking this historical fact of language into account, Cupid being painted blind shows us that human desire at its deepest root is unreasonable and impulsive. According to art historian Erwin Panofsky, “Helena’s speech is casting back to a medieval tradition in which Cupid was painted with a bandage over his eyes to represent the blindness of vulgar sensuality” (1962: 122-3). It could be that in all of this, it is vulgar fancies of the mind which produce such irrational action in our four lovers. This breaks down the whimsical ideal of love and turns our characters into nothing more than people acting out of animalistic craving. This cynical view of love is supported also by the adventures of the lovers in the forest.

The entirety of the forest escapade is used by Shakespeare as a major point of support for the theme of the fickleness of the imagination in relation to love. Everything that happens in the forest is dreamlike and serves as a metaphor for the human imagination when spellbound by love. When Demetrius and Helena meet in the forest in Act 2 Scene 1, Demetrius degrades her, saying, “Tempt not too much the hatred of my spirit; For I am sick when I do look on thee” (2.1.211-2) to which Helena responds, “Then how can it be said I am alone, When all the world is here to look on me?” (2.1.225-6). When Helena says that “all the world” is there looking at her, she is saying that Demetrius is the entire world, for he is the only one present. Again, it is Demetrius’ look which is described explicitly, showing the power of a love-object’s gaze. This ability of the eyes to engender both hatred and love is what lead Shakespeare scholar James L. Calderwood to say that “these annihilating looks and the general antagonisms of the wood may remind us that falling in love is hard to distinguish from falling in hate” (1992:39). These “gazes” are employed by Shakespeare once again as plot devices in Oberon’s scheme.

The whole concept of the “love juice” and its application to the eyes of Lysander, Demetrius, and Titania is a connection between the eyes and the imagination. When Puck anoints the eyes of these three characters, they instantly fall in love with the first thing they see. This is an exaggerated form of the concepts of beauty being in the eye of the beholder and love being blind. It is exaggerated purposefully as to show how the mind can ridiculously warp our vision of love and our love-object. Especially in Titania’s case when she falls instantly in love with Bottom, who has the head of an ass. In Lysander and Demetrius’ case, they represent the fickleness of the imagination and love when they both instantly fall in love with Helena, since they had both just been pursuing Hermia. The following confusion of Helena’s disbelief that the two men really love her, as well as her accusations that Hermia has conspired with them to play a prank on her, create yet another display of the fickleness of the imagination. Confusion plays its role again in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, in the play-within-the-play.

Shakespeare uses the interesting tool of ‘metatheater’ to press the power of the eye and the imagination’s fickleness one more time to his audience. In the play put on by the bumbling actors, The Most Lamentable Comedy and Most Cruel Death of Pyramus and Thisbe, we are again faced with metaphors backed by a larger metaphor. The fact that the actors are terrible and do ridiculous things such as Snug telling the women in the audience to not fear him because he is not really a lion, but Snug, or Starveling, who plays the moon, saying “This lantern doth the horned moon present” (5.1.231), shows the air of confusion around the entire performance. The title itself shows a confused troop of actors, for how can a comedy be most lamentable and funny at the same time? Well, besides it being a pun of Shakespeare’s since they act so terribly that the play is actually funny, no play can truly display both these themes wholly and this shows the performance as one surrounded in confusion. This confusion is similar to the misunderstandings of the lovers in the forest. Within the context of this confusion of performance, Pyramus and Thisbe are only able to view and hear each other through a crack in a wall which furthers the idea of the imaginations ability to create, elaborate love fantasies and that the mind is opened to these through the eye. They can only see each other through a slit, so the eyes of the lovers are windows into one another’s minds. Without much deep knowledge of each other, they fall madly in love and create an incredible romance. This is very similar to what happens in the forest with the “love juice” and the four lovers. Their eyes act as Pyramus and Thisbe’s do, as do their imaginations. The tragic end of Pyramus and Thisbe shows the most extreme point of where the mind can lead someone, to death. They built their entire romance, one which they died for, around one another’s eyes. And what passions came of it, what senseless passions.

In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, both the mind and the eyes are as senseless as the other. The mind lacks serious judgment, perhaps shown best in Helena’s unrequited love for Demetrius. Thus, Love’s eye and mind are both blinded, as Cupid was blinded, because the senses fall short, as did Pyramus and Thisbe’s senses, and the mind lacks judgment, as do the minds of Demetrius, Lysander, Helena, and Hermia. The fickleness of the imagination in relation to love is repeated throughout with references to the “eye”: the anointing of the lovers’ eyes by Puck in the woods and the subsequent mess they find themselves in, the looks and gazes which set the minds of the lovers into fantastical imagination, and the metaphorical use of the tale of Pyramus and Thisbe’s eye-engendered romance that leads them to their deaths. In Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the eye leads the characters in and out of love, confusion, and unbounded imagination. The eye acts as a window into the characters’ minds, while the imagination is a fog which covers that window, shaping our lovers into a literal representation of the imagination’s fickleness in relation to love.

Unique Ideas for Foyer Furniture

Just a peek into a house can reveal some closely guarded secrets. If the eye is the window to the soul, then the house is the window to the person’s personality. The way you present your house to others, especially the main entrance, will define your personality while sending across the right message to the people around you.
Decorating with Furniture
Foyer areas tend to appear stuffy and congested owing to the lack of natural light streaming in through windows as well as the lack of broad, open spaces that the other rooms of the house have. Given here are a few ideas that will help you decorate your foyer and make it welcoming for guests. Besides, with these ideas, you can make optimum use of the space to store your everyday requirements like sunglasses, keys, umbrellas, and those little things you tend to forget on your way out of the house.

Cabinets

Placing old cabinets, or a chest of drawers that is no longer being used, is a viable option to decorate the foyer. You can use it to neatly stack your gloves, scarves, keys and other essential goods that you tend to forget while stepping out of the house in a jiffy. You can revamp the look of your cabinet by giving it a fresh coat of varnish or paint, or else, simply coat it with a sheet of wood laminates. If you decide to build a cabinet, then go in for the cabinets with a granite top; it will lend the foyer a stylish yet elegant look. Team it up with a strategically placed mirror and a few lamps; and there you have a neat and tidy foyer.

Wall-mounted Shelves
Corner Shelves Wall Groves Shelves Elegant Shelf
Another good option for effective space utilization is having wall-mounted shelves. The shelves are ideal to hold items like the daily mail, keys, or even your sunglasses. Experiment with the design here, as you can start from the floor level and go as high as you want your shelves to be. You could probably try the step design, which will allow you to stack your footwear in the lower rungs while the upper rungs can hold lighter items or even show items.

Mirror Cabinets
Reflective cabinet Sliding Mirror Cabinet Mirror Cabinet Reflective Glass Cabinet with Base Cabinet
Mirror, mirror on the wall! This is for those obsessed with mirrors and more mirrors, and some cabinets. A wall-to-floor sliding mirror can easily camouflage a storage space behind it. You can stack away your umbrellas, jackets, coats and whatever that is worth stacking behind this sleek yet stylish piece of furniture. Another reason why you should opt for a sliding mirrored cabinet is that the mirror will reflect the light, thus, making the foyer area appear roomy; besides, you can have that extra peek at yourself just before leaving the house.

Console Tables
Table Console Table Decorative Foyer Console Antique Console Table
The good old table comes in very handy here. Old tables covered with a nice lace cloth can hide just about anything that you want. If this does not suit your style, then go in for console tables; these stylish yet useful tables can hoist your accessories as well as serve as a nice platform to place vases or decoration items. For those of you who prefer antique tables, go in for the console tables that have the appearance of having been passed down from your ancestors. Team the console table with a good wall painting.

Rods and Racks
Loft and Rod Hooks and Chair Passage Library Wall Hooks and Seating
Racks, rods and hooks can be used in an effective way to hang those coats, purses and bags or even umbrellas. If your house lacks space, this is the best option for you to consider. The only problem with open racks, rods and hooks is that it looks a tad messy as compared to the other storage options.

Seating
Loft with Seating Stylish Seating Seating with Cabinet Elegant Settee
Placing a bench or settee in the foyer area is a good idea, especially when it involves putting on shoes. The bench can conveniently hide shoes and other footwear beneath it, and if it comes with a storage drawer, then it is all the more a good option to store other objects. Placing a couple of chairs and a table also helps to keep books and your handbag.

Apart from these storage and seating ideas, you can breathe life into the foyer area with some creative foyer lighting; and yes, do not forget mirrors! Make use of many of them as it will make your foyer appear spacious. You can even paint the wall in bright colors to make it more warm and welcoming.

In the Limelight

Johansson is demi-Danish, demi-Jew as she is the descendant of a Danish father and an Ashkenazi Jewish mother. Thanks to her movie-buff mother who accompanied her to the auditions, Johansson entered the industry rather young. She got her first break in Rob Reiner’s production ‘North’, which was sadly a major disaster. However, her talent got critical praise a couple of years later for her role in If Lucy Fell and Manny & Lo. Johansson earned herself name and recognition for her role in Robert Redford’s The Horse Whisperer. She was accredited for being able to perform with a talent that contradicted her age.

The Making of a Star …

Johansson’s status as a star rose with her performance in Lost in Translation where she played the role of Charlotte, an abandoned young wife. She won the BAFTA award for her role in the film. Besides, she also won a nomination for the Golden Globe award and was also nominated by the Broadcast Film Critics Association and the Chicago Film Critics Association.

Apart from her roles in Hollywood, Johansson has also made her presence felt in Broadway, playing the role of Catherine Carbone in Arthur Miller’s, A View from the Bridge, earning herself a Tony Award for Best Performance in a Play.

Love, Life and Johansson

Preferring to keep her personal life under wraps, Johansson despises the idea of sharing her personal matters on social networking sites. Here’s what she has to say on social networking, “I don’t have a Facebook or a Twitter account …That, to me, is a very strange phenomenon. I can’t think of anything I’d rather do less than have to continuously share details of my everyday life … But I’d rather that people had less access to my personal life. If I could keep it that way, I’d be a happy lady.”

Johansson’s relation to Canadian actor, Ryan Reynolds resulted in marriage which was short-lived. Johansson filed for divorce in 2010. Soon after that, she was linked to Sean Penn; they, however, split in May 2011. She was previously linked to Jared Leto, Josh Hartnett, and Patrick Wilson. Being a huge fan of Woody Allen, there is no doubt that she is regarded as a muse for Allen himself. Johansson claims to have a liking for the bad boys and has a connection to older men.

Musical Inclination

Johansson sang ‘Summertime‘ for Unexpected Dreams – Songs From the Stars, in 2006. She performed for the Coachella Reunion in Indio in 2007. Johansson was the leading lady in Justin Timberlake’s video ‘What Goes Around… Comes Around‘ in 2007. Johansson recorded an album titled ‘Anywhere I Lay My Head‘ consisting of an original track and 10 cover versions of Tom Waits’ songs. Johansson along with singer Pete Yorn recorded an album titled ‘Break Up‘ in 2009. She sang the track ‘Bullet‘ for the album ‘Terrible Thrills Vol. 1‘ in 2010. She also sang the track ‘One Whole Hour‘ for the documentary Wretches & Jabberers in 2011.

Politically Speaking …

Johansson campaigned for John Kerry in the 2004 Presidential elections and for Barack Obama in 2008. Johansson supports Barack Obama and hosted a fashion launch whose proceeds go into the President’s reelection campaign. Johansson publicly supports Scott Stringer’s 2013 run for the New York City mayor.

Ambassador

Johansson has been the ambassador for Oxfam International, an aid and development agency, ever since 2005.

Johansson is the face of Spanish clothing brand Mango since 2009. She is the face of Dolce & Gabbana, L’Oréal, Louis Vuitton, Calvin Klein.

In 2009, Johansson became the first celebrity to be the ambassador of Moet & Chandon Champagne.

Seeing the way Scarlett Johansson has created a niche for herself in an industry which depends solely on talent, it is needless to say that the young starlet is on the right path to success.

California on the Precipice, Facing $16 Billion Deficit

If you think the United States has it bad from the perspective of massive debt and unsustainable and crippling budget deficits (and, for some reason, some people don’t think this), then California is probably going to serve as a study in what not to do in running a state. The overzealous lawmakers in that state have pushed their greedy snouts into so many projects and regulations that doing business in California is nearly impossible. But what’s even worse is the amount of taxes the state must raise to support all of this irresponsible and ill-advised spending.

The state currently has a budget deficit that is projected to grow to $ 16 billion this year, something that will create large cuts to schools and public safety if voters do not approve a tax increase in a state that already has taxes that are too high by any reasonable measure. Things in California have gotten so bad, in fact, that the state has taken to taxing those who no longer reside in California, and have seized the so-called taxes via agreements with banking behemoths who comply by sending “taxpayer” money to the state without notifying the account holders.

It’s the latest in a series of totalitarian “big brother” moves by a state that claims to have everyone’s best interests in mind but, in reality, is governing itself into an abyss. Of the necessary tax increases and spending cuts, Governor Brown notes, “This means we will have to go much farther and make cuts far greater than I asked for at the beginning of the year. But we can’t fill this hole with cuts alone without doing severe damage to our schools. That’s why I’m bypassing the gridlock and asking you, the people of California, to approve a plan that avoids cuts to schools and public safety.” In other words – “we’ve spent your money terribly over the past several decades…and now we need more.”

Biography of George Clooney

Enough has been said about George Clooney’s rakish good looks, his complete control over the box office and his cheerful persona. As a true American movie star, he’s proven that his success has been a result of that devastatingly handsome face, along with an astute knowledge of the movie-making business. So it isn’t surprising when every little detail about his steady rise to stardom has been well-chronicled, right from his struggling days as an upcoming actor to his philanthropic endeavors. His name ensures a huge box office draw, and his affiliation with humanitarian causes garners worldwide attention.

What is it about Clooney that generates such a lot of interest? That millions of women swoon over his overwhelming good looks could be dismissed as a natural reaction, but to even have the male population succumb to the Clooney-esque charm? Now that’s saying something about a guy who, despite having reached the dizzying heights of fame, has remained more or less unperturbed by it all. Characteristically belittling of his ‘sexiest man alive‘ tag, he has managed to cling to his bachelor status, and continues to shun the very idea of having children. Despite this, he still makes all the women want him, and all the men wanting to be him.

While going over his steady rise to stardom, one can’t help but think if there indeed is a proverbial chink in the Clooney armor. For very rarely has an actor, with this kind of gigantic celebrity status been able to stay grounded, with an image so squeaky clean. Is the legendary George Clooney aura for real? Or is it purely the work of a really dedicated PR machine? Let’s find out …

George Timothy Clooney was born in Lexington, Kentucky to Nina Bruce and Nick Clooney on May 6, 1961. While his father was a known face on television, his aunt was actress and singer Rosemary Clooney (talk about being born into showbiz!). Clooney reportedly began to make his charming presence felt on his father’s sets since a young age, and had no trouble in getting attention from the studio audience.

As a student at Augusta High in Kentucky, he was never academically inclined, but was very passionate about baseball. He even tried for the Cincinnati Reds, but didn’t quite make the cut. College at Northern Kentucky University wasn’t too different either, before a minor movie role came his way, courtesy his cousins, Miguel and Rafael Ferrer. That movie never saw the light of the day, but what it did succeed in doing was igniting the acting spark in young Clooney, who’d finally found his true calling in life.

The next obvious stop was L.A., where he lived with his aunt Rosemary for a while, as he waited for that big break. No, it didn’t just fall into his lap right then. He had to do a lot of odd jobs that included selling insurance and even lemonade, and do a few insignificant parts on TV. These bit parts translated into regular roles as he went on establishing his acting credentials.

Then E.R. happened, and the infinitely adored Dr. Doug Ross took center stage. E.R. became a rage, and with it, George Clooney.

One Fine Day was Clooney’s first movie release, a saccharine rom-com about single parents. He made a fantastic pair with Michelle Pfeiffer, and banked heavily on his inherent charm. His first movie, however, was the Quentin Tarentino written horror-dark comedy From Dusk Till Dawn where he played the foul-mouthed antihero.

In 1997, an exception in his otherwise illustrious movie outings came in the form of Batman and Robin, which earned him a Razzie nomination. Graciously accepting his miscalculated decision to play the Caped Crusader boosted his popularity, and in the same year, he became People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive, a title that he’d receive again in 2006.

His first Golden Globe came in 2000 for Coen brothers’ Odyssey inspired movie, O Brother, Where Art Thou?.

Next up was the 2001 movie that catapulted Clooney to the big league. Steven Soderbergh directed the star-studded robbery heist Ocean’s Eleven, with Clooney playing the role of Danny Ocean, stepping into Frank Sinatra’s shoes, and those were some shoes to be filled. With Clooney’s charm (there goes that word again) no one would’ve imagined a better actor to play the role of a devilishly captivating con man.

His behind the scenes debut came in 2002 with Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, which was not exactly a box office draw, but it had the George Clooney touch, which meant that it kind of impressed the critics, if nothing.

He paired up with Catherine Zeta-Jones in 2003′s Intolerable Cruelty, a delectable rom-com, and followed it up with Ocean’s Twelve in 2004, which, as expected, earned millions worldwide.

The stunning Good Night, and Good Luck released in 2005. Directed by Clooney and scripted by him along with Grant Heslov, this was the story of journalist Edward R. Murrow, and his public spat with Senator Joseph McCarthy on his anti-Communist stance. Later in the year came Syriana, the geopolitical thriller that won him an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor.

Hard-hitting Michael Clayton won Clooney a lot of accolades when it released in 2007, followed by the third installment of the phenomenal Ocean’s Series, Ocean’s Thirteen in the same year.

His next directorial venture came in 2008 with the sports comedy Leatherheads. The year 2009 saw Clooney come up with two versatile and memorable performances beginning with the war comedy The Men Who Stare at Goats and the comedy drama Up in the Air.

In 2011, George Clooney gave us the heartwarming The Descendants, where he played a hapless father to two difficult daughters, trying to cope with his wife’s death and infidelity at the same time. His restrained performance, combined with a razor-sharp sense of wry humor earned him a Golden Globe for Best Actor and an Academy Nomination.

As the current ringleader of Hollywood Humanitarianism, George Clooney is as loved for his cinema as he is for the causes that he lends support to. He is known to credit his humanitarian leanings to his parents who always pushed him to “look out for people who had trouble looking out for themselves”. From his early life in Kentucky to the glitzy Hollywood Hills, from Darfur to D.C., then up on stage to receive the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award, and from there to jail, Clooney, as a UN messenger of peace, has been instrumental in highlighting suffering and injustice in different parts of the world.

While his fundraising efforts for the Katrina hurricane victims and for those of the Haiti earthquake have been applauded, there have been mixed reactions to him being the face of the civil unrest in Darfur. He does not claim to be an expert on resolving conflicts, and disses rumors of his political ambitions. To have a top-notch Hollywood star resort to his clout in order to bring attention to a crisis is not a crime, but some see him as an outsider bulldozing on someone else’s turf. Not that it discourages Clooney in any way, who when last heard of, was busy making plans to bring the perpetrators of the Sudanese genocide on trial. As of now, his only purpose seems to be just that – getting justice for the innocent victims of Darfur, caught in a vicious circle of vested political interests in the center of this oil-rich region.

Present day Hollywood has far too many examples of drunken brawls, DUI incidents and racist rants being publicized in the name of celebrity pressures. But then you look at a man like George Clooney, who in his own opinion is too much of a womanizer and a wastrel, but still manages to evoke the kind of warmth and affability that he does. As he continues to deflect his movie star spotlight on to his philanthropic arena, one still remains clueless about that elusive chink-in-the-armor. Yes, so he did date a lot of women, and mostly will continue doing so, and simply ruined Batman for all of us, but even then he remains the ultimate Hollywood heartthrob.

Still looking for a downside to the Clooney mania? Let’s just settle for that impish smile of his, then.

Food and Drinks That Go Well Together

In our world, there are some people who simply eat and drink to survive, and then there are others who find themselves on this page, wanting to know about the fine art of food pairing. On the other hand, the unenthusiastic are bound to be outraged with the big deal made out of nothingness. After all, don’t you just have to eat what you like and drink what you like?

Well, yes. But let’s consider for instance if you’ve wondered why certain wedding cakes have a distinct mulch-esque taste to it? Have you ever wondered if the champagne that you drank with it could have clashed with the cake’s flavor? Indeed it could have. Deceptive pairings like this one can assault your palate with their not-meant-to-go-together tastes. What results is an aversion to two seriously likable food and drink items, albeit not together. And this is exactly what brings us to the divine concept of food pairing, because when deliciousness is at stake, everyone stands up and takes notice.

Having said this, I must concede that subjectivity has a huge role to play when it comes to pairing food with the right drink. So, be open to experiment and go wild choosing the combination that you think is the best. Yes, we’re all aware of the basics of pairing, but a little attention to detail is what elevates a good meal to a heavenly one.

The Classic Pairs

RED WINE
Red Wine
Beef Beef
When you have a wine that drowns your senses in the spicy, rich taste of black currants, you need an accompaniment that matches its headiness. A beef steak fits the bill almost perfectly, and so do braised short ribs.
Cheese Cheese
As an ode to the strong flavor of, let’s say the Cabernet Sauvignon, the best cheese would be the equally formidable brie, camembert, strong cheddar or Danish blue. Always remember to match the richness of the wine to the cheese.
Turkey Turkey
Very few things in this world can match the homeliness of the Thanksgiving roast turkey and a light red like the Beaujolais or even the Pinot Noir. These fruity reds compliment the herb-laden stuffing of the turkey like nothing else.

WHITE WINE
White Wine
Cream Sauce Pasta Cream Pasta
It really pays off well to match your food with your drink in terms of the color. Pair your creamy, melt-in-the-mouth shellfish pasta with a Chardonnay, and you’ll understand this better.
Oysters Oysters
Oysters make for an excellent starter, and the Pinot Blanc will bring out its taste really well. While we’re discussing starters, crab cakes are a very good option to pair with a Light Sauvignon Blanc.
Caviar Caviar
As far as legendary food and drink pairings go, champagne and caviar top the list. While we may not always have access to a bottle of Dom Pérignon and a serving of Beluga caviar, do remember to pick a dry champagne to go with caviar, and raise a toast to champagne wishes and caviar dreams!

BEER
Beer
Pizza Pizza
The beer and pizza combination might be offensively unhealthy, but it doesn’t make any difference to its royal fans. If there’s anything that makes this combination taste better, it’s a football match on ESPN.
Nachos Nachos
Nachos, with their cheesy, salty taste pair well with a golden ale beer and are easy to include in any party menu. As a matter of fact, the nachos can easily be replaced by anything that’s deep-fried and salty.
Barbecue Barbecue
Barbecue and beer are perpetual summer specials when the sweltering heat of the day gives way to breezy evenings. This is one combination you can never go wrong with, though everyone has their favorite, barbecued meats taste better with pale ales.

The Cocktail Pairs

VODKATINI …
Vodkatini
.. With Shashlik Shashlik
One usually thinks of pairing cheese crackers with a regular martini, but since we’re speaking of its Russian variant, its appropriate partner is the shashlik. Shashlik is a Russian spin on barbecue, so it won’t be too nice to wash it down with anything except vodka.

MARGARITA …
White Wine
.. With Mexican Food Quesadillas
Being Mexican, what else would they taste best with except Mexican food? So bring on the crudités, tortillas and tacos, make a pitcher full of margarita, and don’t forget the salsa dip! It’s a great way to spend an evening with friends.

NEW FASHIONED …
New Fashioned
.. With Pork Ribs Ribs
The New Fashioned cocktail is whiskey-based, which tastes best with pork ribs. But make sure that the ribs are not soaked in spice-laden sauces, as that messes the taste of the whiskey. Always keep the meat simple, and relish!

The Best-loved Pairs

Milk and Oreos Milk and Oreos
Yes, milk’s favorite cookie also ranks high on everyone’s preferences. And how could it possibly not? A glass of cold milk, a stack of chocolaty oreo cookies; you can’t ask for a better midnight snack, especially when you’ve run out of ice cream!

Cherry Coke and Burger Coke and Burger
What could be termed as a potential catastrophe for your arteries has to taste divine; just like this cherry coke and burger combo. Why the cherry coke, you ask? That’s because it works well for me! Feel free to pick your favorite cola to go with your favored burger.

Afternoon Tea Afternoon Tea
Quintessentially British, this custom deserves a mention due to its sheer elaborateness and the fact that it’s slowly disappearing out of our lives. Cucumber or smoked salmon sandwiches, scones with cream and jam, fruit cakes and finally, cream tea … ah! A taste of the good life!

Coffee and Cakes Coffee and Cake
Coffee and cakes have a charm of their own, and we need to be reminded of it as we usually tend to have our coffee on the run. In fact, the practice of takeaway coffee must be discouraged to let people meet and greet over a hot cup of coffee and a plate of cakes accompanied by some juicy gossip.

Juice and Oatmeal Orange Juice and Oatmeal
This one’s for the health freaks, and come to think of it, the sinners too. This is one combination that has the power to save you from that quadruple bypass surgery, if you’ve made a habit of consuming all the combos mentioned above with regularity, although it is sure to make your taste buds rebel.

It was Mark Twain who said, “The only way to keep your health is to eat what you don’t want, drink what you don’t like, and do what you’d rather not.” Most of the food and drinks mentioned here are categorized as sinfully unhealthy, but there are certain healthy fast food drinks out there, as are nutritious meals. All you need to do is, to reserve the ones mentioned here for special occasions and eat healthy otherwise. Bon appetit!

Surprising Uses of Everyday Foods

Food is necessary to fuel our bodies, but sometimes we buy too much of it at the grocery store. When your produce starts to go bad, or when you’ve kept those spices around for just a bit too long, or when you thought you’d make a recipe out of all of those ingredients but just didn’t get around to it, there are many other ways you can still use your food instead of throwing it away. Surprisingly, it doesn’t involve eating it either.

Fruits

Before throwing away old banana peels, use them to shine up metals and leathers that you have. Rub the peel against the surface and then polish it with an old cloth. Banana meat is also good for reducing wrinkles. Dab a bit on those trouble spots, let it sit for a while, and then wash it off, and your wrinkles will disappear. Lemons are great to lighten skin and hair. If you have troublesome acne scars, dab a bit of fresh lemon juice on them and leave it overnight. You’ll notice a difference in the morning. Apple slices will help ripen tomatoes quickly when the two fruits are placed together in a paper bag, and orange peels are great fire starters for your next backyard fire pit party.

Vegetables

A slice of cold potato over your eyes can reduce puffiness and redness on your eyelids. Sit with the potato over your eyes as you would with slices of cucumber in a spa. Garlic removes splinters with ease. If you rub garlic over a splinter, it will come right out.

Oils and Condiments

Mustard can make you feel a lot better if you are suffering from a cold. If you use it like a vapor rub and apply it to your chest under a wet towel, you’ll feel better in no time at all. Butter can help you untangle all of those knotted necklaces that are in the back of your jewelry drawer. Just slather some on, watch the necklaces slip apart, and rinse them off. That high-calorie mayonnaise in your fridge that you are trying not to eat because it will ruin your diet is great for getting crayon off of the walls. The next time your kids draw all over, don’t worry. Slather some mayo on there and wipe it all away. Olive oil is a great product for your skin, as well as to quieten creaky hinges. If your dog or cat brings home fleas, using salt is a great way to get rid of them around the house. Just pour salt into the vacuum cleaner and around the baseboards. Let it sit, then vacuum the salt up. The salt dehydrates the fleas and kills them. Be sure to throw away the vacuum bag or empty the vacuum bin immediately, or some of the fleas can crawl back out.

Beverages

Everyone knows the trick of using club soda to get dark stains out of the carpet. But did you know it also works to get pet urine out of the carpet too! Beer is a great hair lightener. If you are out of lemons, try soaking your hair in beer before going outside. Just don’t forget to wash it out afterwards. That old 2-liter bottle of pop will work wonders if you need to clear out a clogged drain. Just pour it down the drain and watch the fizzes do their job of breaking up the gunk. Milk is great for stain removal, especially if your stain is some type of ink. Just soak some into the stain and watch it loosen up.

As you can see, there are so many other uses everyday foods have around the house. So next time, before tossing any food away thinking it is of no use, stop for a moment and think about all their uses mentioned here.

‘The Dictator’ Rules With A Satirist’s Fist

Audio for this story from Fresh Air from WHYY will be available at approx. 5:00 p.m. ET

Sacha Baron Cohen plays Admiral General Aladeen, the authoritarian, anti-Semitic and unexpectedly sympathetic protagonist of The Dictator.

The Dictator

  • Director: Larry Charles
  • Genre: Comedy
  • Running Time: 82 minutes

Rated R for strong crude and sexual content, brief male nudity, language and some violent images

With: Sacha Baron Cohen, Anna Faris, Ben Kingsley, Jason Mantzoukas

Many fans will be disappointed that Sacha Baron Cohen’s The Dictator is a more or less conventional comedy and not an ambush-interview mockumentary in the style of Borat and Bruno. But that guerrilla-clown shtick would be tough to sustain: Why not let him try something else? The good news is that The Dictator is loose and slaphappy and full of sharp political barbs and has funny actors moving in and out — and at a lickety-split 83 minutes it doesn’t wear out its welcome.

Baron Cohen plays Haffaz Aladeen, the authoritarian ruler of the fictional African nation of Wadiya, a cross between Gadhafi and Kim Jong-Il. This raging egomaniac with his ridiculous fur-ball beard orders his surname to be used in place of such common words as “Yes” and “No,” which means you can’t tell what anyone means when they answer, “Aladeen” — and if you complain about that or anything else, he’ll have his guards haul you off to be beheaded.

Aladeen controls a vast oil supply and is building nuclear warheads, which he tells the world will be used for “peaceful purposes” — but has the giggles before getting the words out. He hates Israel. For fun, he watches tapes of the ’72 Munich Olympics massacre.

Baron Cohen loves portraying anti-Semites as imbeciles. The title links the film to Chaplin’s Hitler satire The Great Dictator. But my guess is that there’s also a process at work here that psychiatrists call identifying-with-the-aggressor: You assume the role of people that you fear.

Baron Cohen’s identification with Aladeen is so strong that you end up rooting — yes, rooting — for the dictator, because this idiot is more likable than his chief aide, Tamir, played by a dour Ben Kingsley. Tamir arranges to have Aladeen murdered en route to a U.N. speech and make Wadiya a democracy, not because he gives a hoot about the people but because it would open up the country to U.S. oil companies and make him insanely wealthy.

The kidnapped Aladeen proves wonderfully resourceful. He gets the upper hand on his torturer by shaming the man for his outdated instruments and reminding him that without a splash guard, he’ll wreck his suit with all the blood. After escaping, the now-beardless dictator takes refuge in a collectively run Manhattan health-food store overseen by Zoey, a human-rights activist played by the utterly delightful Anna Faris.

The Dictator is the kind of anti-fascist movie that has you cheering when Aladeen takes a job in that lefty store and wins over its staff by using brutal, authoritarian techniques on the city health inspector. He and Zoey are an unlikely couple, but when she says, “The police here are such racists,” and he says, “Yeah, and not in a good way,” they have a real rapport.

The Dictator doesn’t approach the greatest of all American anti-war farces, the Marx Brothers’ Duck Soup, but Sasha Baron Cohen and director Larry Charles are certainly in the arena. In a climactic speech, Aladeen extols the benefits of a dictatorship over a democracy, which gives leaders, he says, power to declare war unilaterally, violate civil liberties, and structure the economy so the rich get richer and the poor stay poor: The speech is a triumph of the satirist’s art. I wish we had more American movies like this — entertainments that mix low farce and high political satire, reminding us that extreme silliness does not preclude extreme seriousness. The Dictator rules!
